Education is a natural process carried out by the human individual and is acquired not by listening to words, but by experience in the environment.
Dr. Maria Montessori
Any Montessori environment is always led by a qualified teacher, who develops a space and curriculum that follows the pedagogy and ideology developed by the Italian educator Maria Montessori. A Montessori childcare believes that developing adults create their sense of self by interacting with their environment. This desire to interact with the environment, Montessori believed, is innate in children under six. In essence, education should provide an open environment that young children can use to facilitate their own development in all areas.
Montessori doesn’t mean an unsupervised, unruly environment where children decide to do whatever they please. The environment is developed very carefully, giving children the ability to ‘freely’ decide their next activity – within the limits of the room, of course. A trained Montessori teacher creates an environment that optimizes the development of all the children in their care, based on the interests of each child themselves as well as what toys, games, books, and activities are relevant to the age of the developing children. The home is well-kept and clean and is constructed to allow free movement and room for activity throughout the space.
Some Montessori day cares extend past the early developmental stages in children and into middle and high school, but the programs that have been studied more extensively are geared for children elementary school-age and below. In some environments, children share their space with other children of varying ages. Young toddlers at around two and a half years old may share the same space as a six-year-old in a Montessori day care, and this is relatively well-studied and encouraged in order to develop social skills among children.
Montessori’s ideas concerning human development can bring your child numerous benefits as they continue to grow. The environment and facilitation of the staff in a Montessori day care give your child opportunities to develop his or her own interests, become independent and free-thinking, determine their own morals and beliefs, and become well-adjusted among their peers and in social environments. Dr. Montessori also fully believed that a child’s education was essential in developing world peace. Creating a society of intellectual, independent, social, and bright minds is exactly what a Montessori day care can produce from its children.
The better question is…why NOT Montessori?
